Which line up should I book to get the best swing & soul band sound?

A minimum of 2 horns is ideal- when there are 2 or more horn instruments they phrase together like a sax or trumpet section in a big band to give those unmistakable brass harmonies. (The videos on the website have been recorded using a 7 and 9 piece band with 3 and 5 horns) The more horns you add, the richer and fuller the sound.

Do you bring your own sound equipment?

Yes. We have an excellent quality P.A. system, suitable for venues up to approximately 350 guests. We also have some stage and dance floor lighting suitable for small venues.

For events outside mainland UK, we will provide a  list of the bands backline requirements.

How long does the band play for and what about music when the band is not playing?

The band plays 2 sets of 50 minutes, or an alternative is 3 x 40 minute sets.

If the event ends at midnight, a DJ isn't generally needed. The band will play music from a laptop or ipod through the PA when the band isn't playing  at no extra charge.

I love swing, but will people dance to it?

Most certainly. The great thing about having swing music at an event is that everyone likes it. It creates an upbeat, sophisticated atmosphere and as the evening progresses we can introduce more contemporary party tunes so as cater for all tastes.

What do I need to provide for the band?

1. A level stage/performance area, size depending on the line-up. This doesn't need to be a raised stage, although it helps us to be more visible.
2. At least 4 x 13 amp sockets.
3. A room for the band to change & store belongings and a proper hot meal and soft drinks/refreshments.

Where is the band based?

The band is based in London, but we travel both in the UK and internationally.

Is it possible to see the band live before booking?

Occasionally we do a public show, however most performances are at private events, so clients/hosts dont always feel comfortable having others along to see us.

Because we appreciate that you need to be 100% sure that The Stirling Austin Swing Band is the right band for you we have made the full length videos, which are a true representation of the bands live performance.We can also send you a DVD on request.

What about insurance and health and safety requirements?

The Stirling Austin Band is insured for public liability, and all PA and electrical equipment is PAT tested and approved for health and safety requirements to comply with venue's requirements.

Some bands quote lower prices. Why should we pay a higher price for a band?

Paying less doesn't mean a better deal when booking bands; it is fair to say that 'you get what you pay for' in this industry. We are a professional band - that makes a massive difference.

Many bands are part time or semi-professional and can quote a lesser price. Others pay musicians less, and that reflects in the performance on the day. Although these bands can sound good on a recording, they may not deliver what you should expect up to and on the day.  We take care of details, planning and logistics, invest in quality equipment, lighting, have replacement musicians in case of ilness, adapt to venue requirements, public liability insurance, PAT tested equipment etc. and are available to chat through anything on the phone or answer emails.

1st Dance: What do you suggest about 1st dance, and will the band learn a song?

The band play many songs that are appropriate for a first dance. If you have a specific song you would like, then please mention to us as there is a chance that we know it already, or it would be easy to learn. The band can't promise to learn any song as some songs need special musical charts and rehearsals before playing and may not stylistically be suited to the band's line-up. However, talk to us first, we'll always do our best to make things extra special.

1st Dance Lessons: We really want to make an effort learning a first dance routine for our wedding - any suggestions?

The Band works in partnership with Taina Kortelainen, a well known dance champion, teacher & choreographer, who can prepare you for your very special first dance to the Stirling Austin Swing Band and even organise a Hen party dance session with a video souvenir! What is the booking process?

To make an enquiry about the band simply send us an email with the details as shown on our contact page and we will get back to you promptly to suggest options and confirm costs. Once the booking is confirmed, a contract will be issued and a 20% deposit will secure the date, with the balance payable before or on the day of the event.
